The El
Ni? creates a warm equatorial water current that flows north along our west coast.
This warmer water causes certain species of fish, like anchovies, to swim in deeper,
cooler water. These fish are a major food source for the Brown pelicans
and when they are swimming in deeper water, the pelicans cannot reach them to feed. The
Pelicans usually migrate to better feeding grounds, but the few that try and wait out the
El Ni? face the risk of becoming extremely emaciated and even possible starvation (Many thanks to Wes Kalinowski for the photo).
When AWRE retrieves these "victims" of
El Ni?, our primary duty is to return them to their normal weight. Once returned to
their proper weight and we feel they are healthy enough, we release them with the hopes
they will rejoin their colony.
